据《卫报》5月22日报道,新西兰政府和博思格钢铁公司[BSL:AU]旗下的新西兰钢铁公司(NZSteel)宣布了一项计划,将花费3亿新西兰币(1.88亿美元)来降低格伦布鲁克(Glenbrook)钢铁厂的排放。根据该计划,政府和新西兰钢铁公司将分别提供1.4亿和1.6亿新西兰币,用一个新的电弧炉取代该厂现有的氧气炼钢炉和四个以煤为燃料的窑炉中的两个。此举可使格伦布鲁克钢厂回收废钢的用煤量减半,并使新西兰每年的排放量减少80万吨,相当于全国年总排放量的1%。

TheNewZealandgovernmentandNewZealandSteel(NZSteel),thecountry’smajorsteelmakerownedbyBlueScopeSteel[BSL:AU],haveannouncedaplantoinvestNZD300m(USD188m)inreducingemissionsfromtheGlenbrooksteelplant,asreportedbytheGuardianonMay22.Aspartoftheplan,thegovernmentandNZSteelwillcontributeNZD140mandNZD160m,respectively,toreplacetheplant’sexistingoxygensteelmakingfurnaceandtwoofthefourcoal-fueledkilnswithanewelectricarcfurnace(EAF).ThistransitioncouldcutcoalusageattheGlenbrooksteelplantinhalf,asitshiftstowardsrecyclingscrapsteel,resultinginanannualreductionof800,000tonsofemissions,equivalentto1%ofthenation’stotalannualemissions.

NewZealandPrimeminister,ChrisHipkins,emphasizedthattheambitiousprojecthighlightsthegovernment’scommitmenttoreducingemissionsasquicklyaspossible.TheNZD140mfinancialsupportcomesfromtheNZD650mGovernmentInvestmentinDecarbonizingIndustry(GIDI)Fund,whichaimstoassistNewZealand-basedbusinessesindecarbonizingwhilemaintainingglobalcompetitiveness.TheadoptionofanEAFattheGlenbrookplantwillsignificantlyadvancethedecarbonizationeffortsinthemanufacturingandconstructionsectors,astheplantcaterstoover90%ofNewZealand‘ssteelrequirements.Additionally,NZSteelplanstopowertheEAFwithelectricitygeneratedfromrenewablesources,furtherreducingthecarbonfootprintofitssteelproducts.Inarelateddevelopment,Japan’slargeststeelmaker,NipponSteel[5401:JP],alsorecinitiatedastudytoshiftfromtheblastfurnace(BF)steelmakingprocesstotheEAF,aimingtoaccelerateitsdecarbonizationprogress.
