TheNewZealandgovernmentandNewZealandSteel（NZSteel），thecountry’smajorsteelmakerownedbyBlueScopeSteel[BSL：AU]，haveannouncedaplantoinvestNZD300m（USD188m）inreducingemissionsfromtheGlenbrooksteelplant，asreportedbytheGuardianonMay22．Aspartoftheplan，thegovernmentandNZSteelwillcontributeNZD140mandNZD160m，respectively，toreplacetheplant’sexistingoxygensteelmakingfurnaceandtwoofthefourcoal-fueledkilnswithanewelectricarcfurnace（EAF）．ThistransitioncouldcutcoalusageattheGlenbrooksteelplantinhalf，asitshiftstowardsrecyclingscrapsteel，resultinginanannualreductionof800，000tonsofemissions，equivalentto1%ofthenation’stotalannualemissions．

NewZealandPrimeminister，ChrisHipkins，emphasizedthattheambitiousprojecthighlightsthegovernment’scommitmenttoreducingemissionsasquicklyaspossible．TheNZD140mfinancialsupportcomesfromtheNZD650mGovernmentInvestmentinDecarbonizingIndustry（GIDI）Fund，whichaimstoassistNewZealand-basedbusinessesindecarbonizingwhilemaintainingglobalcompetitiveness．TheadoptionofanEAFattheGlenbrookplantwillsignificantlyadvancethedecarbonizationeffortsinthemanufacturingandconstructionsectors，astheplantcaterstoover90%ofNewZealand‘ssteelrequirements．Additionally，NZSteelplanstopowertheEAFwithelectricitygeneratedfromrenewablesources，furtherreducingthecarbonfootprintofitssteelproducts．Inarelateddevelopment，Japan’slargeststeelmaker，NipponSteel[5401：JP]，alsorecinitiatedastudytoshiftfromtheblastfurnace（BF）steelmakingprocesstotheEAF，aimingtoaccelerateitsdecarbonizationprogress．
