内容摘要
Grandchildcareplaysanincreasinglyimportantroleinraisingchildren.However,thehealtheffectofgrandchildcareongrandparentsremainsunderstudied.Thispaperestimatesthecausalimpactofgrandchildcareongrandparents’healthinChina.Identificationisachievedbyusingthegenderofgrandparents’firstchildastheinstrumentforprovidinggrandchildcare.Themaintwo-stageleastsquaresestimatesdemonstratethatprovidinggrandchildcareleadstobetterself-reportedhealthstatus,betterpsychologicalwell-being,improvedlungfunction,andenhancedepisodicmemorycapacityofgrandparents.Furtherheterogeneityanalysessuggestthatthepositivehealtheffectdiffersaccordingtoregionalcharacteristicsandgrandparents’demographicfeatures.Thepaperalsodocumentsthatgrandchildcaremightshapegrandparents’healthbyreducinglaborsupply,restrainingaccesstoresources,gettingridofpoorhealthbehavior,andincreasingchildren’semotionalsupport.
