内容摘要
Weconstructanewdatasettrackingfounderownershipthroughfirmlifecycle.Wefindthatfounderownershipincreasesforprivatefirmsfrom1996to2018,whiledecreasesforpublicfirmsbothatandpostIPO.Weexplainthispatternbypresentingamodeloffounders’optimalallocationbetweenliquidassetsandentrepreneurialfirms.Foundersdecreasetheirownershipinordertoconsumefromliquidassets.Intheprivatemarket,theilliquidityofentrepreneurialfirmsleadstoanincreasedmarginalconsumptionrate,andreducesfounderownership.Arelaxedilliquidityconstraintexplainsthecontradictoryfounderownershiptrendsintheprivatethepublicmarket.
