Agroupofexpatsattendedafamilycookingclasstolearnhowtomakexiaolongbao.
Theevent,organizedbytheCityNewsService,aplatformsupportedbytheInformationOfficeofShanghaiMunicipalityandrunbyShanghaiDaily,andHuacaoInternationalCommunityCenter(HICC),invitednineexpatsfromeightcountriesincludingastheUS,UK,Australia,Germany,theCzechRepublicandIndia,totakepart.
ItwasthefirstofflineeventinHuacaoTownafterCNS'sfirstofflineservicestationwassetupatthecenterinearlyDecemberwiththeaimofcreatingamoreexpat-friendlysocietyinwhichforeignerscanhaveawiderandcloseraccesstolocalgovernmentaffairsandcommunitylife.
GuoZhenghua,askilledcheffromFumaiXiaolong,aShanghaicuisineandsnackchainstorebrand,togetherwithacolleague,guidedthegroupinmakingjuicyandtastyxiaolongbao,orsmallsteamedbuns.
TomakeauthenticShanghaismallsteamedbuns,pickingtherightingredientsisessential,suchaslocallyproducedporkleg,middleglutenflour,tapwaterandporkskinjelly.
Theporklegwillbegroundintoporkpaste,andcondimentswillincludegingerpaste,salt,sugarandchoppedgreenonion.
Flourandwaterarefirstmixedtogethertoformadoughtobeslicedintobars.
Thebarisgraspedinthelefthandandpulledandcutusingtheright.
Theneachpieceisshapedintoaflatdiscwithathickercenterandthinnerrim,thenfilledwithingredientsusingchopsticks.Onepiecewillhold20gramsoffilling.
Thefinalstepismovingthediscanti-clockwisewiththeindexandthumboftherighthand,whilemakingfoldsclockwisebypinchingwiththelefthandtocloseupthebun.
Whenfinished,axiaolongbaolookslikeawaterchestnutandhasusuallyabout18foldsonthetop.Eachweighsabout30grams.
Abamboosteamerwillholdaboutsixsmallsteamedbunsforthefinalsteamingprocess.
NicoleStewartfromtheUShasbeenlivinginMinhangDistrictinShanghaifornineandahalfyears.Shedescribedtheeventas"fun"and"lively."

"Ididnotanticipatethetechniquebeingsochallengingtopickup,butitwasonlywithpractice.Maybethatskillwillcome.Butitwasfun,livelyandnicetobewithmyneighbors,learningthisnewfood."
AngelaPetersen,aUKnationalwhorecentlymovedtoShanghaifromGermany,said:"I'vemadedumplingsbefore,butneverlikethis.Thisisquitechallenging,togetthepinchingrightandtounderstandhowmuchfillingtoputin."

NicoleStewart来自美国,在上海市闵行区生活了九年多,这是她第二次参加华漕国际社区中心烹饪班。
近日,Stewart与其他外籍友人一起,在富麦小笼郭正华大厨的指导下做起美味多汁的上海本帮小笼。
此次大家制作的富麦小笼,是上海美食界的名牌产品,被中国烹饪协会、中国饭店业协会选为“中国金牌小吃”。每一只馅料都塞得满满,咬上一口都能感受到汤汁喷涌,微甜咸鲜的味道是老上海经典味道。
现场,大家尝试将新鲜的猪肉磨成的肉酱,撒上姜和葱花去腥,再加入盐、糖等调味料进行调制,做好了鲜美的小笼包芯子。
又跟着大厨把面粉和水混合揉制面团,切出条状,捏成一个个中间厚、边缘薄的扁平圆盘,填入刚刚调好的馅,最后右手食指和拇指配合,逆时针方向移动圆盘,同时左手顺时针方向捏合,一个个小笼包就完成了。
6个小笼包整齐放入竹蒸笼蒸上15分钟左右,热气腾腾的小笼包就出炉了。
“我没想到制作小笼包如此具有挑战性。以后,我也想跟我的邻居们一起做小笼包。制作的过程很有趣,是一项美好的体验。”Stewart表示。
最近从德国搬到上海的英国人AngelaPetersen说:“我以前包过饺子,但从来没有做过小笼包。要一边包馅,一边揉捏,有点小难度。”
据悉,该活动由上海市新闻办公室支持、上海日报社运营的CityNewsService主办。华漕国际社区中心(HICC)邀请了来自美国、英国、澳大利亚、德国、捷克共和国和印度等8个国家的9名外籍人士参加。
Petersen表示,“刚来上海,一直在忙着安顿,所以还没怎么了解过这座城市。但我想探索上海,融入国际社区,和中国朋友一起参与更多的活动。”
未来,华漕国际社区将继续做好中外文明交流互鉴、中外居民交往交融的桥梁,以每周丰富的课程、特色的节日活动,拉近外籍居民与社区的距离,鼓励他们参与社区建设,让外籍人才“来得了、待得住、用得好、流得动”,助力华漕打造成为“国际化未来之城”。
