Xiaomi Reconfirms Mass Production of EV by Next June as First Vehicle Images Unveiled

BEIJING,November22(TMTPost)—XiaomiCorporationreconfirmedtheproductiontimetableofitshighly-anticipatedelectricvehicle(EV)business.

Atanearningscallwithanalysts,XiaomiPresidentLuWeibingsaidhiscompanydoesn’tchangeitsmassproductiontargetofEVinthefirsthalfof2024andthesecondwintertestforthemodeliscomingsoon.WhiledecliningtorevealmoredetailsabouttheupcomingEV,Lusaidthereareafewkeypointsabouttheofferingthathecanmakeclear,andoneofthemisvehicleisindispensableinXiaomi’sentirestrategicvisionof“HumanxCarxHome”smartecosystem.Therefore,Lubelievesconsumerswillnolongerbuyanindividualproductbutanecologicalcompany,andtheywillseethesmartphone-centeredsynergyofconsumerelectronicsinthefuture.UndertheHumanxCarxHomeecosystem,Xiaomi’smajorbrandsofsmartphoneandEVwillpropelotherbrandstoprovideproductexperienceandsolutionstouserstargetingdifferentusergroups,Lusaid.

Lu’sremarkcamedaysafterimagesofXiaomi’sfirstEVmodelwereleakedatagovernmentfillinglastweek.XiaomihasappliedforapprovalofmakingtwoEVmodelsunderitsbrand,accordingtothe377batchofthePublicNoticeonRoadMotorVehicleProductionEnterprisesandProductsreleasedbytheMinistryofIndustryandInformationTechnology(MIIT).TheannouncementmarksChineseauthoritiesallowedXiaomitobeginfull-scaleproduction.

TheMIITfillingshowedXiaomi’sEVmodels—SU7serieswillbeadoptedtwodifferenttypesofbatteries:oneisthelithiumironphosphatebatterymadebyBYD’ssubsidiaryFudiBatteryCo.,Ltd,andanotheristheternarylithiumbatteryofferedbyContemporaryAmperexTechnologyCo.Ltd.(CATL).

Therear-wheel-drivevariantofSU7hasa220kWmotorandanall-wheel-driveversionfeaturesadual-motorsetupthatcombines275kWand220kWmotors,themodelhasatopspeedof210kilometersperhour(KPH)andtheSU7Maxiscapableofreachingtopspeedsof265KPH.TheSU7seriesaresettobepoweredbyHyperOS,Xiaomi’snewoperatingsystemrolledoutlateOctober.ThevehicleswillbemadeinitsownfacilityandtheproductionqualificationwasprovidedbyBeijingAutomotiveGroupOff-roadVehicleCo.,Ltd.,aunitofChinesestate-ownedautomanufacturerBeijingAutomotiveIndustryHoldingCo.Ltd.(BAICGroup).

XiaomiCEOLeiJunrevealedatsocialmedialateOctoberthatXiaomiplanstolaunchitscarinthefirsthalfofnextyear,withoutgivinganydetails.ThePresidentLutoldanalyststhattheinformationandimagesdisclosedattheMIITwebsiteobviouslymadeitclearthatXiaomiwilllaunchasedan.Hedeclinedtorevealmoredetailsbutmentionedthereareabout3,000employeesworkingforresearchanddevelopment(R&D)ofautomobilebusiness.

FinancialresultsindicatedXiaomihasrampeduppreparationformakingEVmodels.ItsR&Dexpensesincreased22%year-over-yeartoRMB5.0billioninthethirdquarter,primarilyduetotheincreaseinexpensesrelatedtoitsEVbusinessandothernewinitiatives.

ChinesedigitalnewsmediaoutletJiemianreportedinSeptemberXiaomi’sautounithasstartedpilotproductionforlessthanamonthinitsfactoryinYizhuang,atowninthesoutheastsuburbsofBeijing,andthereareabout50vehiclestobebuiltperweekfortest.TheYizhuangfacility,builtintwophases,issettohaveatotalannualcapacityof300,000vehicles,with150,000unitsofeachphase,andconstructionofitsfirstphasehascompletedandpassedacceptancetestinginJune,accordingtoreportsearlierthisyear.

Xiaomiisexpectedtodebutitscarin2024,withestimatedshipmentsof500,000to600,000units,accordingtoanotethatTFInternationalSecuritiesanalystMingChiKuoissuedinOctober.Theanalyst,whoiswellknownasareliablesourceofAppleproducts,saidXiaomi’sfirstEVmodelwillhavekeysellingpointsincludingautonomousdriving,softwareecosystem,800Vfastcharging,andpowertrainspecifications,withanestimatedpricebelowRMB300,000.Ifthepriceapproachesorfallsbelow250kyuan,shipmentestimatescouldberevisedupward,Kuoadded.
