比赛开始不到一分钟，周冠宇、拉塞尔、角田裕毅、阿尔本和奥康的五辆赛车就发生严重碰撞。其中，周冠宇的赛车因右后轮受到拉塞尔赛车左前轮碰撞，在空中翻转后飞出几十米远，并最终撞在了围场的栏杆上，车辆受损十分严重。不过万幸的是，周冠宇在事故中得益于F1halo装置的保护，并无大碍。在经过医疗中心评估后，周冠宇已经安全出院，随后通过社交媒体向广大关心其安危的车迷报了平安。
