APEC set for leading role in globalized economy: China Daily editorial

TheAsia-PacificEconomicCooperationEconomicLeaders'WeekinSanFranciscofromNov11-17hascaughtworldwideattention.NotonlyaretheAPECmemberssomeofthefastestgrowingandmostdynamiceconomiesintheworld,butalsotheAsia-Pacificregionisatthecenteroftheglobaleconomy,drivingbothgrowthandinnovation.
Aregionaleconomicforumestablishedin1989toleveragethegrowinginterdependenceoftheAsia-Pacificeconomies,APEC,with21memberstoday,hasbecomealeadingproponentofeconomicglobalization,freetradeandmultilateralgovernance.
Ithaseffectivelystrengthenedmacrocoordinationamongeconomiesintheregion,acceleratingregionaleconomicintegrationandadvancingbalanced,inclusive,sustainable,innovativeandsecuregrowth.
Duringtheweek,delegateswilltakepartinhigh-levelmeetingsandsideeventswithkeystakeholderscoveringawiderangeoftopics,including:supplychainresilience;science,research,andinnovation;criticalandemergingtechnology;cleanenergy;high-standardinfrastructure;women'seconomicempowerment;andinclusivity.
Themeetingtakesplaceagainstthebackdropofsomedevelopedcountriesturningtoprotectionismandunilateralismtohelpboosttheireconomies,alongwiththechallengescreatedbytheCOVID-19pandemicandescalatinggeopoliticaltensions.Inthiscontext,thisweek'sdiscussionsundertheoverarchingthemeof"creatingaresilientandsustainablefutureforall"arepertinentnotonlyfortheregion,butfortheworldasawhole.
Overthepastdecades,Chinahascloselyintegrateditsowndevelopmentwithregionaldevelopment,anditisastaunchsupporterandactivepromoterofeconomiccooperationintheAsia-Pacificregion.Throughitscontinualopening-up,theChineseeconomyhasbecomecloselylinkedwiththeothereconomiesintheregionandanAsia-Pacificcommunitywithasharedfutureisgraduallybeingformed.In2022,China'stradewiththeAsia-Pacificregionreached$3.1trillion,accountingfor36.8percentofitstotalforeigntradethatyear.
Atthisweek'smeeting,participantsshouldopposeallformsofprotectionismandreaffirmtheregion'scommitmenttoupholdafree,openandnondiscriminatorymultilateraltradingsystemandaregionalcooperationframeworkthatfostersinterconnectedgrowthandconverginginterestsintheAsia-Pacific.
Itisacommonwishofpeopleintheregionthattheleadersofthe21APECeconomies,includingthethreelargestintheworld,cantakefulladvantageofthemultilateralplatformtoexplorewaystoworktogethertoboosttheregion'spost-pandemicrecovery.TheAsia-Pacificshouldnotbeviewedasatheaterforzero-sumpoliticalgames,butratherasastagethatissetformutualachievementandwin-windevelopment.
