Shandong'sgreenexpresswaysetsexampleforothers
A161.9-kilometerstretchofroadfromJinantoWeifanginShandongprovincebecameChina'sfirstzero-carbonexpresswayinSeptemberlastyear.
Fromtheair,theexpresswayresemblesawindingdragonwhosescalesaremadeofphotovoltaicpanels.Thisprojecthasusedtheroad'sverges,serviceareas,tollstationsandbuildingrooftopstoformanintegratedsolarpowergenerationinstallation.
Thepanelsonthevergesonbothsidesoftheexpresswaystabilizethesoilaswellasgenerateelectricity.Inaddition,thepanelsinstalledonisolatedspotsalongtheroadutilizeotherwiseidleland,providingastablepowersupplyfortheexpressway,saidXieGuomu,directoroftheJinan-WeifangexpresswayprojectofficeofShandongHi-SpeedGroup.
"Achieving'zerocarbon'involveslong-termandcomprehensiveplanning.Throughemissionreductionmeasures,thetotalcarbonemissionsduringtheexpressway'soperationalperiodareequaltoorlessthanthetotalcarbonreductions,achieving'zeroemissions',"Xiesaid.
Thephotovoltaicfacilitiesandsmartsystemshavesignificantlycontributedtotheexpressway'scarbonreductionefforts.
ThephotovoltaicpowerinstallationsalongJiweiExpresswayhaveacapacityof68megawatts.Overa25-yearoperationalperiod,thetotalelectricitygeneratedisexpectedtoreachapproximately1.7billionkilowatt-hours,withatotalcarbonreductionofabout1.52millionmetrictons,Xiesaid.
Thephotovoltaicpanelsinstalledabovetunnelentrancesprovideelectricitydirectlytothetunnel'sequipment.Amongtheequipmentusedinthetunnelsisanadaptivelightingsystemthatautomaticallyadjustsbrightnessbasedonexternallightconditionsandvehiclespeed.Thissystemensuressafedrivingwhilereducingenergyconsumption.
LuYoufu,businessmanageroftheenergyandenvironmentdepartmentofShandongHi-SpeedGroup,said,"Thecompanyhasalsolaunchedasmartroadnetworkmanagementsystemandpromotedtheuseofelectronictollcollection,whichhasgreatlyimprovedtrafficefficiencyandisexpectedtoreducevehiclecarbonemissionsby140,000tonsannually."
Theexpresswayalsousesaradarandvideoroadsidesensingsystemtodetecttrafficevents,withakeyeventdetectionaccuracyrateofover97percent.Byutilizingcomprehensivemonitoring,reliableemergencyresponse,andreal-timeforecastingandwarningtechnologies,theexpresswayensuresprecisevehicledispatchingandguidance,enhancingdrivingsafetyandtrafficflow.
Inresponsetowintersnowconditions,theexpresswayemploystechnologiestoimprovedrivingconditionsoncriticalsectionssuchasmajorbridges,continuousslopes,shadedareasandtunnelentrancesandexits.
Serviceareasareanothermajorareawherecarbonemissionscanbereducedduetotheirrelativelyconcentratednature,saidLu.
AttheJinandongservicearea,whichcovers20hectares,photovoltaicpanelshavebeeninstalledonroofsandcarports,creatingaphotovoltaicpowerstationwithatotalinstalledcapacityof3.2megawatts,complementedbyenergystorageequipment.
Thephotovoltaicsystemattheserviceareageneratesover10,000kilowatt-hoursofelectricitydaily,equivalenttosaving1,200tonsofstandardcoalannually.
"Thegreenelectricityensuresthepowerneededfornew-energyvehiclesrunningontheexpressway,"saidLu.
Inthefirsthalfofthisyear,thedailyaveragetrafficflowonexpresswaysnationwidewas35millionvehicles,withnewenergyvehiclesaccountingfor4.7million,accordingtotheMinistryofTransport.
Asnew-energyvehiclesontheroadincrease,thedemandforelectricitymeansthatserviceareaswillneedtoaccelerategoinggreen.
Bytheendoflastyear,17provinceshadstartedbuildingzero-carbonserviceareasalongtheirexpressways.
ShandongHi-SpeedGroupaimstoconstructmorethanthreeadditionalzero-carbonexpresswaysandoversevenzero-carbonserviceareasbytheendof2025,itsaid.
