红嘴鸥体长37~43厘米,头为白色,在繁殖季节变为黑色或红色;脚为橙黄色,到繁殖地变为赤红色;鸟喙呈鲜红色。正因为上述特征,在英文中取名为“黑头鸥”(Black-headedGull),中文得名“红嘴鸥”。红嘴鸥属于涉禽,以小型鱼虾、昆虫和软体动物为食,也食用人类丢弃的食物残渣。红嘴鸥通常寿命为10余岁,最长可活到30岁。
